Family hotels in Amsterdam

- -Traveling with family is a pleasure on its own. You will experience a reduced amount of nostalgia and all pleasures of sharing your experiences with your kids. Children learn a lot when traveling, visiting historical places and observing different people. Obviously – all Amsterdam nightlife aspects will be not in your family itinerary, but you must also have in mind that staying in crowds, walking on long distances and waiting in line to some museums, might be a little heavy on children, especially small kids. Nevertheless - if you adapt your schedule, make it less crammed and if you foresee the time for kids to play, they will enjoy travel not less than you do.

Here is our choice of the family hotels in Amsterdam. They are all in different price ranges; check our reservation system for the rates.
Banks Mansion (51 rooms)
One of the best in town, Carlton Banks Mansion is not a per se family hotel - just a luxurious four star lodging located at the Herengracht canal, in the old centre of town. As the hotel has been rebuilt a decade ago from a municipal office building, it is essentially modern inside, although classic in its decoration. The canal view double rooms are the best.
Address: Herengracht 519-525
Ibis Amsterdam City Stopera (207 rooms)
This relatively new (built in 2000) hotel has simple, modern, air-conditioned, rather small rooms, and it is located in a short walking distance from all main tourist attractions, including Amsterdam ZOO. Its main values are good service, moderate rates and specifically the Ibis Stopera strict rule; that a child until 12 stays free in the parent’s room. At Ibis it means, that if you rent a 3-beds room, the child stays free and you will be paying only the double room rate.
Address: Valkenburgerstraat 68
Hotel Estherea (71 rooms)
This four stars family owned hotel, is located in the old city centre at the Singel canal. It has been renovated in 2007 but its style remains classic and elegant. Staying at Estherea you will reside in one of the most beautiful parts of the city. A quiet and charming hotel.
Address: Singel 303-309
Holiday Inn Amsterdam (256 rooms)
This modern, comfortable hotel offers affordable possibilities for a stay with children. Twin bedroom features two big, American style double beds and plenty of space to move around. No pretense, just very good service. One child up to 18 can stay for free with the parents, and children up to 12 do not pay for breakfast. Holiday Inn Amsterdam is located near the RAI congress centre, close to Amstelpark – a great place for small kids.
Address: De Boelelaan 2
Museum Square Hotel (34 rooms)
Although it’s outside façade is very modest, this hotel will surprise you with the high level of its service. Its rooms are more spacious than in other Amsterdam hotels, they are fully equipped, and some of them have a bath. There is also space for an extra bed in the room (€ 30). In summer breakfast is served on the terrace in the hotel’s garden.
Address: De Lairessestraat 7
Golden Tulip Amsterdam Centre (239 rooms)
Not characteristically a family hotel, Golden Tulip Amsterdam Centre is perfectly located for sightseeing and shopping. It is well connected by tram with the Museum Quarter as well as with Artis ZOO, very close on foot to Anne Frank House and the old district of Jordaan with its ice cream parlors, pancake restaurants and its Monday and Saturday markets. The hotel is also just a step from the city main shopping street and Amsterdam best department stores.
Hotel van Onna (39 rooms)
This is an immaculately clean, budget family hotel in Amsterdam. But if you travel with two or three kids your low cost deal may go sour as Onna charges € 45 per person, so at some moment you might be better off renting a bigger room with an extra bed in a more expensive hotel. Onna is beautifully located at the Bloemgracht canal and its service is spotless.
Address: Bloemgracht 102-108, tel. +31-(0)20-6265801

Owl Hotel (34 rooms)
This traditional, small hotel is known for its good service. It is located in an old, monumental building near the Vondelpark and the museum quarter. Although its interior may seem dull, it is comfortable and immaculately clean. Children up to 3 stay for free in the room of their parents, while an extra bed is only € 20,-. Owl Hotel has also two triple rooms and one quad room. One of the best hotels in town for a pleasant stay with your family at the moderate charge.
NH Tropen Hotel (80 rooms)
The high rise hotel building dating from the 1960-ties may seem to you dull at first, but NH Tropen offers peace, space and comfort. Children up to 11 are allowed to stay free in the room of their parents. Located outside the city centre in East Amsterdam, Tropen has an excellent communication links to all places you might need. The fabulous Tropenmuseum (Tropical Museum), great for a visit with kids, is just next to it.
Address: Linnaeusstraat 2/C
