Originally built in 1921, Lloyd Hotel was a lodging house for people waiting for a ship abroad, often migrating. Located near the Amsterdam harbor, it lost its function with the development of air travel. During many years the building served as an artists community. Only in the last decades the port of Amsterdam moved away from the city and the Eastern Docklands area became a scene of the rapid urban development. The whole new quarter of Amsterdam has been built and Lloyd Hotel has been restored.Today, Lloyd Hotel seems too big to be called a boutique hotel (it has 116 rooms), nevertheless it is perceived as such, because of its unusual and imaginative design. Some of its rooms offer the highest possible comfort and are ranked five stars. Still, many of its rooms are ranked lower, some having only one star and a shared bathroom, with their prices adjusted accordingly.
Rebuilt by as many as 50 Dutch designers, Lloyd Hotel amazes with their creativity. Located near the whole area of new architecture, the hotel shares some of this area’s new energy with its guests. The feel is futuristic. There are modern art works placed throughout the hotel and there is a special space inside the hotel (Cultural Embassy) informing the visitor about all cultural activities at the hotel and in the city.
Lloyd Hotel is welcoming and remarkably clean: the service is good, breafast excellent, it has conveniant restaurant and a bar, it offers a complimentary WiFi, an easy access by car from the Amsterdam ring and a proximity of the city centre – 20 minutes walking distance through the city under construction. Furthermore, as Lloyd Hotel is located not far from the Central Station, there is an easy communication to whole Amsterdam. The hotel has also a garage and a secure parking facilities. The restaurant Fifteen, Jamie Oliver’s twin resturant to the one in London, is situated nearby (500m).Overall Lloyd Hotel gives an impression of being a simple shelter of the future, very nearly built for people leaving the Earth for Mars or another planet. Nonetheless, its main values – hospitality and friendly service are timeless.
